Leadership in Monetary policy is vital for nation building – Cardoso

Mr. Olayemi Cardoso, central bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor, declared that for a nation to thrive and achieve economic growth and stability,  leadership in monetary policy must be sound and a part of the administration’s strategy to achieve economic prosperity. He said in a keynote address on Friday.

“For central banking, leadership means being disciplined enough to protect price stability, while staying agile enough to adapt to shocks, and forward-looking enough to anticipate change.” He said.

The apex bank chief, while delivering a keynote speech to students at the maiden edition of “CBN Governor’s Annual lecture series” highlighted that the main purpose of monetary policy is to bring stability in the economy while curbing excess liquidity and easing inflationary pressures.

“Leadership in monetary policy cannot be divorced from nation building” he declared.

“Price stability is essential, our task is to foster a  stable macroeconomic environment where productivity thrives and opportunities flourish.” He added.

Speaking on the theme: ‘Next Generation Leadership in Monetary Policy and Nation Building,’ Mr Cardoso calls for thoughtful leadership which requires dialogue, “that is why we’ve launched this lecture series; it’s about building a community of inquiries and passing ideas across generations.” He said.

Governor Cardoso further emphasised the importance of credibility in central banking, stressing that the leaders of tomorrow must embrace transparency, evidence, and data-driven decision-making.

Stating that Nigeria’s youth must lead with creativity and courage, harnessing technology to drive financial inclusion and build a trusted economy.
