The Bank of Botswana held its benchmark Monetary Policy Rate steady at 5.5% on Thursday, 2026, extending its policy pause following a similar hold in June.
Official communication from the central bank indicates policymakers opted to maintain borrowing costs to further gauge the impact of previous tightening actions on domestic price stability.
The prolonged pause comes after an aggressive 200 basis-point rate hike in April 2026, which lifted the key benchmark from 3.5% to its highest level since September 2017.
Recent macroeconomic data shows headline inflation slowed to 9.4% in July 2026 from 10.7% in June, though it remains notably above the bank’s target range of 3 to 6%.
