France Weighs Retaliation After Burkina Faso Severs Diplomatic Ties

Paris is reviewing reciprocal measures after Burkina Faso formally cut diplomatic relations on June 26, culminating a multi-year breakdown in security and political ties between France and the West African nation.

French Foreign Ministry spokesman Pascal Confavreux rejected the sudden diplomatic rupture. In a statement on Saturday he called it a “hostile and unfounded decision, which illustrates the worrying course chosen by the authorities of Burkina Faso.”

It all began on Friday when Burkina Faso’s military junta led by Captain Ibrahim Traoré since a September 2022 coup,  announced via national television that it was cutting diplomatic ties with its colonial ruler effective immediately, ending decades of traditional post-colonial diplomatic frameworks.

Burkina Faso Communication Minister Pingdwendé Gilbert Ouédraogo accused Paris of “ceaseless activism” against national interests.

Communications Minister Ouédraogo stated that essential conditions for bilateral relations, including “mutual respect, trust, non-interference in internal affairs, and respect for national sovereignty are no longer being met.”

Ouagadougou leveled serious accusations against its former colonial ruler, alleging that Paris maintains “blatant neo-colonial ambitions” and provides “active support for subversive networks and terrorists” operating across the conflict-hit Sahel region.

French officials denied the allegations, advised citizens in the country to exercise heightened vigilance, and confirmed that the protection of French government personnel and expatriates remains under strict review.

The complete institutional break follows a pattern of regional decoupling; Burkina Faso previously expelled 400 French special forces in 2023 and suspended major French state broadcasters, including RFI and France 24.

This diplomatic divorce mirrors recent shifts by neighbors Mali and Niger. Under the Alliance of Sahel States, all three military-led regimes have dismantled French security pacts while pivoting toward Russia for defense.
