Global Tech Access: Nairobi Bourse to Offer East Africa’s First AI ETF

Kenya’s Nairobi Securities Exchange is developing East Africa’s pioneer artificial intelligence-focused exchange-traded fund, targeting a market listing before the close of 2026 to track high-growth global technology equities.

Nairobi Securities Exchange Chief Executive Officer Frank Mwiti disclosed the strategy, confirming active regulatory consultations with Kenya’s Capital Markets Authority to structure the shillings-denominated investment instrument for domestic retail and institutional investors.

The fund will track leading international technology equities with direct artificial intelligence exposure, enabling domestic market participants to access global megacap tech performance without managing direct cross-border foreign exchange conversion friction.

The move marks a major expansion for Kenya’s capital market, following the July 2025 listing of the Satrix MSCI World Feeder ETF and the historical 2017 rollout of the Absa NewGold fund.

Kenya’s exchange is leveraging expanding mobile trading connectivity to attract younger retail investors, broadening options beyond traditional sovereign debt and domestic equities while monitoring international technology valuation cycles.
